Job Description
The Animation Supervisor (AS) must have a proven track record in film or commercials VFX as a Lead or Supervising Animation artist, demonstrating technical wizardry and exceptional visual aesthetic geared towards complex Animation, team leadership, and proactive problem- solving. The AS must be able to innovate and demonstrate a true understanding of the subtleties of their given discipline and the ability to seamlessly work with the other supervisors. The AS is responsible for training future talent within the 3D department. This also requires working with the Talent team to identify talent gaps and recruit for them. They coach, mentor and lead their given area of the department. The AS will have experience with clients and be able to advise upon the most effective ways to approach high-end visual effects. As one of the direct links throughout the project they must possess an in-depth awareness of client requirements and how to co-ordinate and guide them through the creative process, often with a great deal of diplomacy, to achieve a result which is satisfactory to all. The Supervisor will manage teams of artists and are a respected authority when advising on technique. They are also responsible for maintaining the overall quality of work within their specialist area to a high standard. They will have excellent communication skills and have the ability to communicate at a high level across all Mill offices, the R&D team and their own 3D teams. They will work closely with the Heads of 3D to ensure The Mill remains at the cutting edge of their specific discipline by researching, testing and implementing new methodologies and sharing their findings with all other Mill offices. The Supervisor will represent The Mill at international VFX and 3D conferences and local events, networking with potential clients to procure new business and raising the profile of their discipline both internally and externally.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrate strong leadership, mentoring, and pro-active problem-solving skills
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with supervisors at other mill offices to streamline workflows across mill sites
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with animation software vendors to ensure features that would be helpful for the mill are considered for development.
  • In conjunction with the Heads of 3D, define a clear, well considered and concise brief to the Research & Development (R&D) team for when infrastructural changes are needed to push the animation discipline forward
  • Progress the animation discipline as a whole with new workflows & methodologies and deploy them across other mill offices if needed
  • Work closely with other discipline supervisors to make sure animation workflows and animation artists are well-integrated into jobs
  • Stay current with developments in the industry
  • Required to be hands-on for shot-work.
  • Have a thorough and expert knowledge of a variety of animation including stylized, cartoon to realistic, and both character animation as well as vehicles/ elements.
  • Understand the mill s current interchange methods between animation and other departments, and advise when and how they can
  • be improved
  • Consistently look for deploying efficiency (either via re-use, or more optimization) for animation work
  • Manage and mentor the 3D Artists of your given discipline on high profile, complex VFX projects, and co-ordinate their visual effects output and ensure high levels of quality control
  • Advise Artists on their technique and provide feedback on work-in-progress •
  • Review training needs and implement suitable training to individuals/teams within your specific area
  • SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
  • Degree in Animation/Visual Effects, Engineering, Computer Science, or at least 5 years’ experience as a Lead Animator or Supervising Animation Artist
  • Strong working knowledge of Maya, with adequate knowledge of Rigging to facilitate data interchange
  • Highly developed knowledge of the visual effects and associated pipelines
  • Should be able to render animation-work to present desired visual intent from an animation artist, and pre-comp in Nuke where appropriate
  • Proven experience of managing large teams of CG Artists
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Exceptional Problem solving skills
  • Build, test and maintain in house tools and asset libraries with the R&D team
  • Regularly provide updates to the team on advances in the work-flow and document these advances on Mill Academy
    • Manage expectations on progress throughout tasks and projects
    Advise on scheduling solutions and bidding when required
    • Research and recommend the best relevant Discipline training programmes available on the market and design/host in-house bespoke training
  • Actively scout for talent and make contact with potential new senior hires
  • Manage the recruitment process with the Recruitment team including; determining the qualities required in a successful
