Job Description

The Business Intelligence Developer works with functional business analysis from Academic Affairs; Business, Finance, and Administration; and University schools and colleges to interpret business processes, develop data interfaces, and specify dashboards and reports.

The Business Intelligence Developer performs software development, production support and provides overall expertise in the area of data warehouse and reporting applications. The duties include maintaining and enhancing data warehouse structures for all five Syracuse University enterprise data warehouses, the ETL integration between most all enterprise source systems and structures, providing production support (including after normal working hours), as well as developing reports and dashboards (MyReports).

The Business Intelligence Developer will support Syracuse University’s data warehouse infrastructure (namely, for the Office of Institutional Research (OIR), where most support is needed), and tool needs, which are sourced from our campus ERP applications (e.g. PeopleSoft, Degree Works, Housing).

  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the following: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or related field preferred.
  • 3+ years’ experience designing and developing ETL programs.
  • 3+ years’ experience SQL programming.

Job Specific Qualifications
  • Advanced experience with or knowledge of most of the following software, languages, and tools, or similar products is preferred:
  • Oracle DBMS
  • SQL Server DBMS
  • Solid SQL skills
  • Relational database and SQL skills experience required (Oracle and SQL Server).
  • Reporting development tools experience required (e.g. Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition and Hyperion Interactive Reporting tool preferred).
  • Data modeling experience.
  • Extract Transform Load (ETL) experience required (IBM DataStage preferred).
  • Linux and windows operating system experience preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including written, verbal and active listening required.
  • Ability to prioritize work, have attention to detail and flexibility in work assignments required.
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team required.
  • Ability to communicate progress/status of assigned responsibilities on an ongoing basis to management.
  • Experience developing thorough documentation to be used for supporting production applications.
  • Thorough understanding and demonstrated use of the SDLC.
  • Ability to mentor/train others required.
  • Higher Education experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Access preferred.

  • Design, develop and modify relational and multidimensional database structures, relationships, data flows and data interfaces within the data warehouse as needed.
  • Use programming languages, software development methods, and “best practice programming techniques to develop new ETL code that requires little overhead with the passing of time.
  • Analyze and modify the data structures within the data warehouse to adapt them to the university’s business needs, and work with clients, Business Analysts, ETL and Database developers to deliver the requested data warehouse solution.
  • Participate in requirements gathering and analysis, technical design, building, testing, documentation and project planning.
  • Provide production support and on-call support during and after work hours.
