Every day, 119,000 compassionate employees serve patients and communities through Providence St. Joseph Health (PSJH), one of the nation’s largest healthcare providers. PSJH is a national, Catholic, not-for-profit health system, comprising a diverse family of organizations and driven by a belief that health care is a human right. Rooted in the founding missions of the Sisters of Providence and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, courageous women ahead of their time who brought health care and other social services to the American West when it was still a rugged, untamed frontier, PSJH is guided by a singular commitment to improve the health of all. Now, as the health care landscape changes dramatically, they draw upon their pioneering and compassionate spirit to plan for the next century of health for a better world, especially for the poor and vulnerable.

PSJH uses their voice to advocate for vulnerable populations and needed reforms in health care. They are also pursuing innovative ways to transform health care by keeping people healthy, and making our services more convenient, accessible and affordable for all. In an increasingly uncertain world, they are committed to high-quality, compassionate health care for everyone—regardless of coverage or ability to pay. We help people and communities benefit from the best health care model for the future—today.

With a vision of creating “Health for a Better World,” PSJH is now in the midst of an exciting transformation. The leadership team has aligned itself toward a vision and framework (“Health 2.0”) intended to transform health care to be more patient-centric, using its tremendous data assets to coordinate care, improve operational and clinical efficiencies, and modernize operations through technology.

Since the 2016 merger of Providence Health and St. Joseph Health, areas of focus have included transformation, strengthening of its core, and growth; now, PSJH is undertaking a number of innovative initiatives system-wide. The health system is developing an institute model for specialty care across the seven states it serves – a virtual network that links all of its care locations, solving gaps in continuity of care for patients and creating a seamless experience for them and their families. This model offers clinicians timely access to best-practice findings, data, and reports, and offers patients quality, compassionate care closer to home, with predictable costs and outcomes.

Key features of this institute model include: patient navigation, concentration of multidisciplinary clinical expertise, accelerated research and innovation, a proprietary data repository for genomics, clinical experts from seven states defining quality measures within disease types, a delivery system organized around key treatment locations with best outcomes, a network that ensures that patients have the right care at the right time in the right place, and a focus on care close to home supported by digital technology. The goal is to unify relevant services, resources, and expertise under six clinical umbrellas: Musculoskeletal Institute, Neurosciences Institute, Digestive Health Institute, Cancer Institute, Cardiovascular Institute, and Women and Children’s Institute.

PSJH has extremely attractive markets and well-positioned assets. Over the past several years, the organization has pursued strategies to create the care delivery platform of the future, and has made significant investments in innovation and systems, with over six elite research investments, as well as investments in EMRs. PSJH is working to bring health care into the digital and consumer age with the goal of better serving patients and consumers, delivering care on their terms – where, when, and how they want it. To achieve that goal, the health system has formed three teams that work together to identify, pilot, and drive the adoption of new technologies and business models. The Digital Innovation Group actively builds software to support patients, consumers, clinicians and technology partners; the Consumer Innovation Group creates health-related businesses in areas such as women’s health, senior services, and chronic disease, partnering closely with Providence employees and patients to create new services and tools designed to support a patient’s ongoing health between episodes of care; and Providence Ventures advances health care delivery by funding technology innovations, working side-by-side with colleagues who are actively building a digital platform to make it easier to collaborate with early-stage companies.

Annual revenues are $25B and growing. PSJH currently operates in seven states through 51 hospitals and 829 clinics where over 24,000 physicians serve over 13 million patients each year.

Providence Holy Cross Medical Center is a 377-bed Magnet facility. The hospital’s signature service is its renowned Emergency and Trauma care, but Providence Holy Cross also offers a full range of specialties including oncology, cardiology, orthopedics, women’s services, neonatology, acute rehabilitation and sub-acute care. In addition to these services, Providence Holy Cross operates outpatient centers in two neighboring communities and educational outreach to young families.
