Two Contracts Assistant positions are available. This is an entry-level role, providing a broad exposure to the book publishing lifecycle, from acquisition to publication to reversion of rights. The Contracts Assistant will assist our busy Contracts team with drafting and negotiating a high volume of contracts and associated agreements for trade books; maintain contract data and contract archives; track and process contracts through all stages; and request contract signature payments. The ideal candidate will be diligent and motivated, actively engaged in learning about publishing from the business side, and able to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders.What you'll do:* Draft a variety of book acquisition agreements and related documents (e.g., author contracts, subsidiary rights agreements, translator agreements, artist agreements, contract amendments)* Assist with negotiating agreements to signature with authors and their representatives, collaborating in-house with editors, legal counsel, subsidiary rights staff, royalties staff, and business managers* Manage signature and payment processing in DocuSign* Enter key contract information into the Biblio3 database* Track contract status and archive signed agreements* Interpret contract details (rights, territories, author approvals) and respond to queries* Provide some general administrative support and handle special projects as neededWhat skills you'll bring:* Clear, diplomatic communicator* Organized and meticulous* Capable of managing multiple priorities* Interested in book publishing, particularly business and legal issues* Able to work both collaboratively and independently* Comfortable with Microsoft Office and G-SuiteIdeal Experience/Education:* Prior professional experience required* Experience with author contracts, subsidiary rights agreements, permissions licensing, or general book publishing or media experience preferred, but not required* Some college preferred; degree not requiredMacmillan Publishers is a global trade book publishing company with prominent imprints around the world, publishing a broad range of award-winning books for children and adults in all categories and formats.
