Engineer I - Lean Manufacturing

Job Description
Job Summary Statement: This position is responsible for providing manufacturing support in a robust and fast paced industrial setting. The primary focus of this position is to drive productivity improvement projects, thus helping manufacturing meet strategic goals. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensure lean methods and tools are understood, accepted and implemented in the site.
  • Lead and facilitate continuous improvement activities.
  • Help implement and standardize best practices across all departments.
  • Assist manufacturing department leadership in organizing and implementing Lean Manufacturing programs, processes and systems to eliminate waste within the value streams and improve overall product quality, manufacturing capability, and process control.
  • Supports and helps lead, guide, energize, and execute lean manufacturing activities, including kaizen and 6S activities, to continuously improve operations. This work includes developing standard work, work instructions, cell layout, material presentation, control plans, etc.
  • Implement Poka Yoke devices and Statistical Process Control techniques for root cause and defect analysis.
  • Work to improve productivity, reduce scrap, and reduce material waste using lean manufacturing strategies.
  • Recommends and implements upgrades to existing equipment.
  • Identify tool designs, and processes to improve consistency, accuracy, and cycle times.
  • Identify and implement shop floor savings (1.5 x annual salary).
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Requirements and Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering or related field.
  • Experience: Familiarity with lean manufacturing practices. Six months experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • English language skills: Able to read, write, speak and comprehend English.
  • Math skills: Able to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Physical Demands: Manufacturing environment. Able to perform any job on shop floor.
  • Work environment: Warehouse is hot and humid in summer months, cold in winter months.
  • Basic knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, Toyota Production System, 5S, Theory of constraints & Value stream Mapping, SPC, and Six Sigma.
  • Capacity to analyze and man workforce utilization, space requirement, workflow and designs layouts of equipment and workspace for maximum efficiency.
  • Knowledge of the tools for formulating and implementing process improvements and best practices in a manufacturing environment.
  • Work effectively as a team member, work with little or no supervision, and communicate effectively (written and spoken) across the organization.
  • Be willing to work additional hours as necessary to complete assigned tasks. Consistently complete quality work in a timely manner.
  • Be a change agent willing to teach and share his/her knowledge and lessons learned.
