    The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission s role is to oversee various aspects of the energy industry, including transmission of electricity, natural gas and oil. We also analyze proposals to build liquefied natural gas terminals and interstate natural gas pipelines and license hydropower projects. To help support the modernization of the electric system here in the U.S., we are focusing on issues associated with a smarter grid. Join us and help make a difference!

    This position is located in the Office of Energy Infrastructure Security. The Office provides leadership, expertise, and assistance to the Commission in identifying, communicating, and seeking comprehensive solutions to significant potential cyber and physical security risks to the energy infrastructure under the Commission’s jurisdiction. The Office will both formulate and make recommendations for Commission action and undertake collaborative engagement with other federal and state agencies and the energy industry to work to identify and communicate risks and vulnerabilities to this nation’s energy infrastructure and assist with the development of collaborative mitigation actions to minimize such risks.

    The Major duties of an IT Specialist (INFOSEC) are:

    • Analyze policies and practices for the development and implementation of protection mechanisms for the cyber-security of energy infrastructure necessary for a reliable interconnected national power system and facilitate processes to engage Office leadership and staff in policy development.
    • Perform analyses related to cyber-security of SCADA systems affecting the national energy infrastructure.
    • Assist with the implementation of security programs designed to anticipate, assess, and minimize system vulnerabilities; e.g., intrusion detection or access authentication programs, coordinate the implementation of security programs across platforms, and establish vulnerability reporting criteria.
    • Identify security requirements and issues and provide technical support on cyber-security as it affects energy infrastructure and critical assets.
    • Obtain and maintain familiarity with cyber-security systems and industry standards used to protect critical energy infrastructure; Support FERC staff in development and enforcement of the cyber-security component of reliability standards;
    • Assist in the development of improved software and other measures that facilitate secure and effective energy infrastructure operations;
    • Perform special studies and analyses, with emphasis on cyber-security, and regulatory systems and procedures employed by the Office in the execution of its regulatory responsibilities;

    Qualifications

    Candidates must have one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level. Specialized Experience is defined as: Expertise or coursework in areas related to Information Systems, Security Systems, Digital Forensics, Data Communications and Networking, Configuration Management, Data Management, Encryption, and Information Assurance. Specific experience with industrial control systems, SCADA, or programmable logic controllers is desirable.
