Job Description


The Junior Designer works under the direction of the Principal to Project manage a single project as a training designer. They will primarily work in tandem with the Principal and the other interior designers to help bring designs to life by taking measurements, creating floor plans and elevations, researching product options, ordering memos and samples, and serving as a liaison between the designer and vendors. He/she may also assist with materials selection, participate in the design process or complete other tasks as needed by the team. Individuals in this position typically work in an office setting, although trips to clients' sites and suppliers are generally required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities – Design Assistant:

Interior Design Projects

  • One design project to project manage
  • Design Assistant – working to support the other designers

  • Visit job sites to take measurements or assess project status as requested by Designer
  • Prepare drawings and furniture layout
  • Assist in the completion of presentation boards
  • Coordinate schedules of Designers
  • Coordinate delivery and shipping issues
  • Identifying and helping resolve project problems and noting opportunities
  • Attend & manage installations as directed by Designer
  • Prepare and maintain client notebooks
  • Ensure proper documentation is completed for all projects
  • Meet with clients to review selections in absence of Designer
  • Coordinate schedules of Designers, Vendors and Subcontractors
  • Select furniture, fabric, window treatments and accessories
  • Prepare Pricing Worksheets and Purchase Orders
  • Assist designer with design concepts, displays and client presentations
  • Prepare specifications, construction drawings, cost estimates and bid documents
  • Create project plan and initial budget for project
  • Create space plans and elevations using design tools (Sketch-up, Minutes Matter, AutoCAD, Photoshop)
  • Assist with fabric, furniture and accessories selections
  • Acquire quotesfrom contractors and suppliers. Pull initial cost for suggested products to create project estimates
  • Enter selections into Design Manager and generate POs for approval
  • Respond to client’s questions and concerns in a timely, informative manner
  • Qualifications for Interior Designer/Project Manager:

  • An AAS or Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design
  • Completed an Interior Design Internship and worked in the industry for a minimum of 1 year
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Revit, Sketchup, Photoshop and Microsoft Office
  • A knowledge of interior design practices and procedures, such as estimating, negotiations, coordination, customer service, drafting and budgeting
  • Candidates must be able to establish priorities
  • Able to work independently, think critically and creatively as well as visualize and develop solutions.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages.

    REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office and AutoCad.

    OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Must be an independent thinker ready to take on new projects and accept direction and change while working under deadlines. Must be able to adapt to changing workloads and possess the ability to reprioritize work accordingly. Job often requires working under pressure while interacting with all levels of employees, clients, and vendors. Requires strong organizational skills and the ability to remain positive in a changing environment.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit at a desk and/ or computer for extended periods of time; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
