The Information Operations Division of SPAWAR System Center, Pacific (SSC PAC) in San Diego, CA is actively recruiting for a Principal and/or Chief Mechanical Engineer via a direct hiring authority. SSC PAC is known for their ability to bring technical concepts to capability through research, development, and engineering. Our missions support the U.S. warfighter through Command, Control, Communications, Computer, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR), cyber, and space system initiatives. Our technological developments touch all warfighting domains. Our team of professionals are able to rapidly prototype, conduct test and evaluation, and provide acquisition, installation, and in-service engineering support. This is a federal position and is located in Point Loma, CA, a suburb of San Diego.


$100,000 - $125,000 depending on experience


Selectee will serve as a Principal/Chief Mechanical Engineer and will coordinate with the branch head and project managers to identify and improve mechanical engineering processes for all projects within the branch. The employee will research best practices from industry, make recommendations and independently build coalitions to implement processes for improvement. In addition, they will be responsible for developing surveillance plans to audit compliance with procedures. The employee will provide mentoring and oversight of junior project personnel on mechanical engineering theory and practices in supporting the design, analysis, fabrication and test of mechanical components for housings, cooling and mechanisms. The employee will define work for teams of mechanical engineers on projects related to the development, test and integration of hardware. The selectee will define drafting standards and will additionally implement a configuration management system suited for a low-rate prototyping environment. In addition, the selectee shall define problems, analyze and formulate requirements, create conceptual designs and mentor junior engineers.

Duties include, but not limited to:

  • Develop solid models, produce component and assembly drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Use additive manufacturing to develop prototypes, experience with stereolithographic, FDM and SLS techniques.
  • Conduct analysis including Finite element modeling using commercial codes.
  • Perform a number of project management tasks independently; to include creating and monitoring a project schedule; ensuring the quality and timeliness of project deliverables, managing project budget, and communicating with project participants and stakeholders at disparate locations throughout the U.S.
  • Interact with personnel at all levels and in all engineering disciplines to support cross functional teams.
  • Work with the project manager to define schedules and resources required to meet project objectives from a mechanical perspective.
  • Requirements:

    Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program

    7+ years experience required

    Must be a US Citizen and be determined suitable for Federal Employment

    Must be able to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance

    Knowledge of SolidWorks or similar CAD package

    Ability to develop engineering assembly and component drawings

    Familiarity with manufacturing techniques suitable for prototyping and low rate production

    Ability to use finite element modeling techniques to conduct structural, vibration and thermal analysis of systems

    Knowledge of mechanical engineering theory underpinning heat transfer and structural design.

    Skills in leadership enabling teams of scientists and engineers to produce quality solutions for difficult and complex problems

    Proficiency with project management tools including MS Project
