With the current cadence of S3 Academy classes, this manager will often have ~20 direct reports, and all of them desire regular touch points with their manager (bi-weekly 1:1 meetings are expected with the Academy participants and those shadowing the Inside SEs). The Inside SEs are typically Early in Career (EIC) as well, and they need counsel and direction on their career paths.Hiring of the Academy SEs is a significant responsibility. I was the hiring manager for app. 20 SEs over the last calendar year plus interns. Hiring for potential (vs. current competency) is different. Tight partnership with the EIC team is critical, and leverage of the more experienced team members in Inside Sales during the hiring process has proven to be effective. The tactical support of the daily issues across 38 CTRs (Sales Reps) is also more hands-on, as the number of active deals and post-sales issues (support escalations, partner challenges, PS shortfalls, etc.) is challenging. The CTR team is greatly made up of EIC personnel, and they just lack experience of how to navigate NetApp, which requires more handholding than more seasoned reps that make up most other teams.Effective collaboration and partnership with the CTR Sales Director and the first level managers is key to the effectiveness of the SE Manager. Job RequirementsTerritory Commercial SE Leader – top priority, and there are 6 SEs currently Support 38 CTR’s, 4 Sales Managers (including SLED), and a Sales Director to support.Participation in the ongoing development/training of the new CTR’s.Biz Partner with Michael Wick – keeping up with Michael Wick requires energy and commitment. He is a great partner, but you must step up.Consultant to Michael Walsh – this proposition can potentially be very important to the effective execution of the role as the CSM team evolves. Most of SE Intern Program in RTP – the intern program in RTP has been productive – we have hired many of them into full time positions, and we have gotten utility from the projects. This requires a significant commitment during the Summer because the SE Manager is solely responsible for defining their project and they do not know NetApp when they start.S3/EIC ProgramHiring – more time consuming than you may thinkOJT weeks – 4 of these weeks per class, and they require planning that is the responsibility of the hiring manager for the functional groups.Consult on curriculum and program – continues to evolve and there is no one in NetApp Learning focused on the training curriculum for new-grad SEs. Mentorship – The regular cadence of meetings with the Academy SEs is very important to them, and they crave lots feedback and advice.Job placement work – more time consuming than you think. The SE Manager is the point of contact for the hiring leaders, and the new SEs want lots of advice when they start to make these decisions. A good quantity of interaction with the hiring SE managers, as well. EducationA Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field and at least 8 years of relevant industry experience is required; or equivalent combination of relevant education/certifications/training and years of applicable professional experience required. Should have at least 2 years of prior people manager experience with at least 3-5 direct reports in a similar industry.
