Job Description

Providence is calling a Pharmacy Technician III (Pharmacy, Day Shift, 1.0 FTE) to Providence St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, Montana. In this position you will:

  • Directs workload and assigns tasks to the technical staff to assure that the IV admixture service is efficient.

  • Products are prepared and delivered in a timely manner.

  • Assures that policies and procedures relating to the preparation and delivery of IV are followed.

  • Evaluates and provides feedback to staff to assure that IV admixture products are prepared using strict aseptic technique.

  • Assures that adequate levels of bulk syringes and various CSP’s (compounded sterile preparations) are prepared at all times.

  • Assures that pharmacy equipment is in good working order and that adequate supplies are available for the preparation of IV admixture.

  • Acts as a resource for staff re: IV admixture.

  • Functions as a staff technician (see Pharmacy Technician I job description) as needed to meet operational requirements.

  • Collects medication lists & interviews patient/family.

  • Contacts retail pharmacies and physicians offices to complete or verify medication histories.

  • Coordinates daily work with clinical pharmacists.

  • Enters collated medication list into computer system for pharmacist review.

  • Provides the clinical pharmacists with completed medication histories and promptly identifies issues that require clarification/intervention.

  • Functions as a staff technician (see Pharmacy Technician I job description) as needed to meet operational requirements.

  • Acts on any controlled substance discrepancies appropriately.

  • Checks patient record for pertinent information before processing orders.

  • Enters charges and credits for patient medications timely and accurately.

  • Refers appropriate clinical questions to a pharmacist.

  • Position will be variable shifts (day/evening) and every other weekend.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Certification by the National Certification exam (PTCB or ExCPT) as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)

  • Must be licensed with the State of Montana as a certified pharmacy technician

  • Valid Montana State Driver’s License, motor vehicle record, and current insurance required upon hire

  • Working knowledge of all policies and procedures related to the preparation of I.V. admixtures

  • Experience with the preparation of all types of I.V. admixtures including minibags, syringes, and large volumes

  • Knowledge of I.V. admixture pumps and related computer software

  • Working knowledge of aseptic technique

  • Clear understanding of medication names and medical terminology

  • Ability to train staff

  • Ability to prioritize and triage work in a high volume, high stress environment

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Completion of an approved pharmacy technician program

  • 1 year of experience working in an I.V. admixture service within an acute care setting
