Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS Degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Art, or related field, or non-communication related degree with additional two years of professional communications experience.
  • Four years of professional communications experience. Non-communications degreed individuals must have six years of progressive responsibility in communications.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated professional experience as a writer, with strong knowledge of professional editorial practices and processes, including copy editing/proofreading.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising the regular production of magazines, journals, newspaper, or similar large-scale publications.
  • Ability to develop and write creative, compelling, and accurate content in a variety of styles for diverse audiences and platforms, including print, online, and digital.
  • Proven communication and collaboration skills with internal teams, stakeholders, and clients.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise strong professional and editorial judgment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and workflow and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated storytelling, writing, research and interviewing skills.
  • Experience working for a major university, newspaper, magazine, or nonprofit organization.
  • Experience working in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign in particular); familiarity with Wrike or similar web-based project management programs a plus.
  • Position Overview:

    The Principal Editor/Writer at the Institute on Community Integration (ICI) is responsible for a wide range of writing tasks for multiple platforms, producing online, digital, social media, and print content, often under tight deadlines. The candidate should be a driven storyteller with strong news judgement and experience writing and editing in a research setting. This role requires building relationships with advocates, academics, family members, and other stakeholders across the disability community to assist ICI’s research, training, and outreach programs. The Principal Editor/Writer must be creative while also possessing the ability to assess and address the needs of multiple clients. The successful candidate will need to work across communications teams (editorial, digital, and design) and be strategic in determining the concept, voice, and editorial direction of a wide range of print and digital projects. The Principal Editor/Writer will be responsible not only for developing stories and writing copy but also editing content for grammar, style, tone, branding, and appropriate language depending on the type of communication and target audience. This position will also supervise the production of at least one large-scale publication three times per year. The incumbent must be able to write for a variety of media types, including video, and have demonstrated knowledge of professional editorial practices and processes, with strong knowledge of AP Style.

    Job Responsiblities:

    Identify, Initiate, and Coordinate Editorial Projects (50%)

  • Editorial management of Impact magazine, published three times per year.
  • Confer and correspond with authors in the preparation and revisions of editorial projects or publications. Advise authors on form, content, and emphasis for trade and text publications
  • Editorial management of ICI’s annual report and related reports to funders
  • Advise on and determine concept and direction of articles.
  • Collaborate with graphic designers and technical staff in producing communication, marketing, and public relations materials.
  • Plan and develop new editorial projects in collaboration with Marketing & Business Development Manager.
  • Coordinate production schedules with vendors and review and edit completed materials and publications, for content, style, and literary requirements, and integrate writing, graphics, marketing into publications.
  • Write Original and Translational Content (25%)

  • Write specialized content for publication in print and electronic mediums.
  • Translate communications strategies and new media tools into ideas for written copy.
  • Translate research into accessible summaries for specific audiences.
  • Create specialized messages and responses for email, social media, and websites.
  • Write for a variety of media types, including narrative video.
  • Editorial Support (25%)

  • Edit and re-write more difficult articles, reports, and publications for content, clarity of presentation, style, and accuracy in word choice and usage.
  • Provide strategic editorial advice for staff and direction on format and style in the planning, preparation, and publication of manuscripts and reports.
  • Advise on how to effectively implement content in new media tools.
  • Identify and initiate editorial projects congruent with publishing and literary trends.
  • Review documents for legal concerns such as libel, invasion of privacy, or infringement of copyright.
  • Ensure that all published materials conform to professional editorial standards.
