Position Number: 00038433 ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY: The Department of Internal Medicine is the largest and most complex department in the Morsani College of Medicine with over 26 Divisions, Programs and Centers/Institutes, total human resources in excess of 1,000, and an annual all-source budget in excess of $115,000,000. The mission of the Department is to rank among the elite in the nation in the areas of education, research and patient care. The Department provides education and training for a diverse group of medical students, residents, fellows and health personnel from USF and throughout the world. Highlights of our success include Board Pass Rate at 100%; Resident Match Rate at 100%; Growth of residency program from 80 to 115; growth of fellowship programs from 70 to 96; doximity ranking at 84 and USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) score average increasing from 200 to 247. The Department's research activities are numerous and involve both basic and clinical research activities in all subspecialties of Internal Medicine. Patient care occurs in our affiliated hospitals (including Tampa General Hospital, H Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, James A Haley VA Hospital, Florida Hospital) as well as our state-of-the-art ambulatory health care centers. The Department also provides healthcare support and services via contractual arrangements with many diverse organizations. The US News & World Report recent rankings of our subspecialties include Endocrinology at 13, Nephrology at 18, and Gastroenterology at 24 and Pulmonary at 28. The Department's faculty represent a group of dedicated physicians and research scientists that are well-recognized as leaders in all three mission areas. POSITION SUMMARY: The Senior Biological Scientist will work under the supervision of the Principle Investigator (Dr. Michael White) in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Disease. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research: Major responsibilities in research include planning, conducting and analyzing research in molecular basis of growth and development of the AIDS pathogen, Toxoplasma gondii; designing and modifying experiments; troubleshooting experimental problems. Independent experiments/ideas within the overall mission of the lab are encouraged.
  • Administrative oversight and support for grants, presentations, and publications will also be requested. Publishing and conference attendance will be encouraged if desired. Participation in additional hiring for the lab to fill needs contingent upon funding will also be encouraged. Laboratory management duties include: equipment and supplies ordering and inventory equipment and laboratory maintenance, monitoring IACUC and biosafety compliance including shipping requirements, supervision of undergraduate students tasked with lab support responsibilities.
  • Instructing and training undergraduate students and technical staff.
  • Preparation of grant and publication materials including figures and tables.
  • POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: MINIMUM:

  • This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a natural or medical science and 2 years of research experience; or a Master's degree in a natural science.
  • Progressively responsible experience involving scientific laboratory or field work may be substituted for the Bachelor's degree.
  • PREFERRED:

  • Candidate should have experience with mammalian cell culture and standard molecular biology techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and/or with a team in design of experiments, planning and execution, data acquisition, and analysis/interpretation.
  • Experience working with laboratory mice is desired.
