    Duties

    Summary

    About the Position: This is a TERM appointment. We provide direct support to a four-star unified Combatant Commander, but are compact enough that our staff also works with senior leadership representatives of our inter-service, inter-agency and (public and private) international partner organizations. We are looking for talented and enthusiastic individuals to join the US SOUTHCOM team.

    Responsibilities

    • Perform as a Watch Officer in the U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM). Incumbent manages the command watch team, bridging higher headquarters and subordinate commands for immediate and planned coordination.
    • Stands a regular watch in the Joint Action Center (JAC) to monitor overall U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) area of responsibility (AOR) and to react to various types of events which may have impact on National security and U.S. relations.
    • Creates and disseminates daily U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) Operations Brief, required reports and notifications, operational messages, and information papers, as required.
    • Monitors all ongoing operations and exercises involving Department of Defense personnel deployed to the area of responsibility.
    • Coordinates intelligence from the USSOUTHCOM Joint Intelligence Center via the Joint Action Center Joint Staff Directorate Intelligence-J2 Watch Officer; Liaisons with Response Cell, Standing Joint Force HQs and the Joint Planning Group Director.

    • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
    • Position requires a Security Clearance at the TOP SECRET/Special Sensitive Level as the incumbent will be required to access, process, use, and safeguard classified National Defense information.
    • This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. The incumbent is must pass urinalysis testing, as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
    • Business travel can be anticipated. Travel by military and/or commercial aircraft may be required in attending training, visiting other activities, and/or attending conferences up to 10% of the time.
    • Incumbent must possess a current and valid passport.
    • This position is subject to uncommon tours of duty and/or shift work. Employee may be recalled to duty with little or no notice.

    In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.     One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service which includes experience collecting, correlating, and characterizing both real world and exercise related events that occur to include Maritime, Air or Land, and Interagency coordination; making appropriate threat assessments to the appropriate decision making levels; and proactively identifying problems and develop recommendations before they impair unit readiness or ongoing operations.

    Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12).
